All For Animals #23: ASPCA 2010 Humane Awards

All For Animals host Susan Richard was there as the ASPCA honored heroes to animals at its 2010 Humane Awards luncheon at Manhattan’s Pierre Hotel.

The honorees included the Dog of The Year, Pearl, who was rescued from a shelter and went on to become a certified search dog who helped save twelve people from the rubble in the earthquake in Haiti.

The Cat of The Year was Henry, a three-legged kitty whose disability is helping to teach tolerance and resilience to others, and whose books and website is helping raise money for other at risk animals.

Simpson’s co-creator Sam Simon was honored for his Sam Simon Foundation, which turns dogs on the euthansia list in Los Angeles into canine heroes, for the hearing impaired and military members with post traumatic stress disorder.

Other honorees included the firefighters of FDNY Ladder 116, who rescued 30 cats and dogs from a burning pet store in Queens, the founders of the Connecticut-based Animal Rescue Flights, a network of 700 pilots who volunteer to transport at risk animals to safety, eleven year old Olivia Bouler, whose artwork helped raise nearly $200,000 to save the birds endangered by the BP oil spill in the Gulf, and Kathleen Schwartz-Howe, whose Days End Farm Horse Rescue in Maryland is at the forefront of equine welfare.
